The ladies’ final at Wimbledon for half of the match was a very compelling a close contest, but one Garbine Muguruza broke the serve of Venus Williams to win the first set, the 23-year-old blew away Williams to win the championship on Centre Court. Today win was her first title of the year and it came on the biggest stage of the year thus far. The win came on solid play especially in the second set where she did not allow WIlliams to win a single game to close out a 7-5, 6-0 victory.
Venus Williams sort of blew her own chances to win today as she had 25 unforced errors and only 17 winners in the match. The ratio in the second set was even worse as for every winner she had she had two unforced errors with 10 of them in the entire set and only five winners. She only won 61 percent of her points on her first serve which was her lowest mark of the tournament. Perhaps as equally important, she only won 31 percent of points on Muguruza’s serve which was again her lowest mark of the tournament. The biggest momentum swing was indeed after she was first broken in the first set that Muguruza went on to win and after that point Williams just lost her game on the biggest stage.
Williams will move to number nine in the world when the newest WTA rankings are released on Monday which is only a two spot jump for the 37-year-old American. Meanwhile, Muguruza will enter the top five from her pervious position of fifteenth. Both players will take a well deserved rest before the upcoming American hard court season begins on the road to the US Open.
